Although I am teaching myself BASH scripting nothing to serious at the moment just building the foundation dabbling customising the shell, writing rsync scripts Nothing to fancy just basic level stuff. My lack of programming experience is holding me back in terms of understanding stuff like variables, functions, loops so it was suggested that I learnt Python to get a foundation?

any of the core languages are good to learn programming concepts, I'd suggest if going down the sysadmin route, Perl should be near the top of you list. and you might want to explore javascript via node.js … theres a lot of emerging stuff based on javascript that might make it a super useful language to low well, but don't start with it. beyond the simple stuff its quite a bit different in how its applied vs other languages.

for real programming tasks … good old c and c++ … if you can't solve a problem with c .. give up! … and if you working with linux you do need to know what this will do and why ./configure & make & make install :)

No .. Scripting and programming are different … Programming allows to to built complex stuff using more concrete structures and designs that let you treat the resulting program like a black box, then use scripts to link progs and data etc together to do magic

fyi … don't try to write programmes with scripts just because you can. Does not mean you should… IMHO its hard work!
