Not sure what the kernel version is - whatever came with Debian 7.1. As
the machine is not connected to the internet, updating that sort of
thing is not so easy.

I have another idea: it might take a few seconds for voltages to
stabilise after power is applied - maybe capacitors have to charge
etc. I don't really know enough about the subject to say if this idea
is feasible, but if it is, it might account for the somewhat random
nature of what has been happening. So, I now wait about 5 seconds
after switching on at the mains socket before pressing the button to
start the computer. It is too early to say that this is the cure, but
so far, there have been no more problems with startup.
