I have a "work" iPad which is used by everyone at home which lead us to
buying our kids (7 & 8) iPods for birthdays which are fairly cheap these
days. In app purchases are turned off and we (the parents) sign out of
app store each time a purchase or update is made.
The kids don't have access to install anything or spend anything.
Also Youtube app can be disabled easily which I would recommend for any
child.
