Do you have any USB hubs? I have had similar problems due to faulty USB hubs.
In my case, the faulty USB hub was somehow affecting other usb
devices, and not just those plugged into the hub.
My guess is that it was something causing interference.
So, try power off, unplugging all USB devices except you trackball,
and then power on.
