As it happens I've just now upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy, and I'm very
impressed. Language support worked pretty much out of the box; I had to
check two boxes to tell it I wanted Chinese language support and the
ability to input complex characters, and it Just Worked(tm)!

If you still have no luck sorting out Japanese on your system, I highly
recommend giving Ubuntu a go.
