4th October2003

When: 10:30 – 17:00, Saturday 4th October 2003 Where: Seminar Room 1, Building 59 (Zepler), Department of Electronics & Computer Science, Southampton University.

Who was there:

What happened:

 • HugoMills, JohnLewis, Tom Bragg and RobSmith helped TonyWhitmore install Debian on his webserver. Eventually. After experiencing DHCP, SCSI and partition problems. Even then it wasn’t quite right. However, we now have the knowledge on how to do it for the future.

 • Tom Bragg had his new media centre PC running Debian.
 • A diagnosis of Mike’s motherboard. (“It’s shagged”)

 • A diagnosis of Lisi’s hard disk. (“It’s nearly shagged”)

 • Jonathan got wireless working on his Mac
 • Most of the #hants regulars spent a fair bit of time talking to each other on IRC whilst sat next to each other.
 • Some people exchanged PGP/GPG keys and waved their passports around.
 • The IRC crowd introduced Kelly to #trivia… and were roundly beaten from behind by a team consisting of Kelly, John, Adrian & Hugo.

 • Some pictures taken by JohnLewis and NeilFerguson are available at http://www.hants.lug.org.uk/gallery/HantsLUG_10_2003

 • HugoMills and ThomasAdam spent some time looking at TesterMike‘s machine. He seemed to have a lot of bad inodes, which after some indepth explanation by HugoMills was solved, with ThomasAdam prompting HugoMills to type commands at the keyboard!

 • PhilipStubbs spent 15 minutes downloading and upgrading Debian testing, then spent over an hour trying to get windows update to do the same. Later DHCP went belly up, so went home before getting blamed for breaking it. ;-)
