I don't think that's ever been the recommended way (at least since Woody).

Mike, suggestion: edit sources.list and put in the squeeze repositories.
Remove (or move) any /etc/apt/preferences file, and any files
in /etc/apt/preferences.d or /etc/apt/sources.d

Run:

- apt-get update
- dpkg --audit

If you get any output from the second command, fix it before proceeding.
Then:

- apt-get upgrade
- apt-get dist-upgrade

Repeat all of the above for wheezy, and then again for jessie.

So long as you have no pinning (hence remove preferences file), your
system will not be downgraded.

The above is by no means foolproof; in fact, from where you're starting
from, you probably will have some issues. It will be hard for someone to
support you via email for some of the issues you may encounter.
