Windows is not a problem: I only have Linux. At the moment, I make
backups on various flash memory devices, which use FAT32 (and I
understand it is not wise to change that). Colons are not allowed, nor
are symbolic links (I package them up in a zip file) and odd things
can happen to letter case. It's all getting a bit cumbersome.

My files aren't that large! It looks like NTFS will do what's wanted.
I have no idea whether it is NTFS-3G - indeed, I'm only assuming the
hard drive I am considering (Transcend 1TB 2.5 inch USB 3.0 Military-
Grade Shock Resistance) has NTFS of any sort because it appears to be
in general use for such things.
