Subject: Re: [Hampshire] Recommendations sought for system upgrade

A Google search led me via www.debian.org/distrib/pre-installed to
only Digital Networks UK Ltd as suppliers of computers with Debian.

However, I have now found a local supplier: Portswood Computers.
They offer a "budget box" system consisting of: case with 500W PSU,
Gigabyte GA-A55M-DS2 motherboard, AMD A4-3300 dual core APU (2.5GHz),
integrated HD6410D graphics, 1 x 2GB DDR3 memory 1333MHz, 500GB SATA
hard drive, SATA DVD+-RW, for 250 pounds

and there is also a "barebone system" consisting of: case with 500W
PSU, Gigabyte GA-F2A55M-HD2 motherboard, AMD Dual Core A4-5300
(3.4GHz), integrated HD7480G graphics, 1 x 4GB DDR3 memory 1333MHz,
500GB SATA hard drive, SATA DVD+-RW, for 320 pounds.

Are those reasonable prices?

That is without software or peripherals. They can install Debian for
a small fee. I have not yet checked to ensure that either of those
systems has the correct sockets for my existing monitor etc, but if
so, I am inclined to get one of those, not sure which as yet.

I asked whether it might be better to have two disks for RAID, but
was advised against that on the grounds that such systems do not
work well. It seems that it would be difficult to have IDE. I think
I will have to manage without that. So, thanks for your comments
and explanations, Daniel, but it really does not appear feasible for
me to have the old disk in the new machine. I'm not happy about
that, but am copying everything to SD cards (slowly, over a USB
1.1 connection). I already have back-ups of all the really important
files anyway.
