Sorry, but I agree with Keith. The possessive would normally be it's, not
its' since it is not plural. But it is correct spelling to use it's for it
is or it has, and its for the possessive meaning "belonging to it".

I have just looked it's, its' and its up in the OED. The OED agrees with
Keith and me.

Either you are misrembering what your uncle said, or he was in error.
