If I were going to do this, I'd use mp3fs (see, for example,
http://www.roysindre.no/a/2008/12/10/convert-flac-to-mp3-on-the-fly-with-mp3fs/).
That uses fuse to convert to mp3 on the fly; however, I'm not sure that it
is exactly what you need.
