This sounds the most likely cause to me.
gpt is a new partition format, that some older bioses might not understand.
Also, the location of the gpt information is exactly the same place
that grub normally sits.
So, installing grub might wipe the gpt partition information.
There is a way to get grub and gpt to co-exist, but I would have to
google to remind myself.
