Similar .. a Korg M50 synthesiser/workstation, and an Alessis Q49 USB
keyboard, both of which worked out of the box as controller keyboards,
though the extended management features of the Korg appear not supported
(extended MIDI commands are, of course, so it may just be that there's
just no tool).

The Korg also works as a MIDI player, though it's default instrument
banks are Korg's, not GeneralMidi. GM needs selecting before use. I
usually mess up that bit :-/

FWIW, the Korg worked more easily with Linux than it did on Windows 7
x64. The former just worked (via Jack). The setup on Win7 was fiddly and
I had some conflicts with some other Windows tools. The Q49 was
completely seamless, but then it's just a controller keyboard.

I guess Mike and I both think a cheapo USB/MIDI cable will likely work
painlessly.

Gordon.
