As an in-between, maybe a tablet could talk to a PC server, e.g., via

Touch screens for PCs are available from various places and at various
prices. Most simulate a mouse, but some are multitouch.

Multitouch may not yet be fully supported on Linux, though I do know
there's _some_ multitouch support.
