sda-d are fixed hdds and I'm expecting the usb drive to get sde.
To answer Richards question; yes the kernel has usb stuff compiled in.
I've got a usb keyboard and mouse working fine and it hasn't been
updated/upgraded or rebooted since I last successfully used the drive with
this machine.
I really hope it's not a dead drive :-(
