Thanks for all your suggestions folks. The topography of the network is of a
mixture of WinXP and Linux boxen, connecting to Netgear router. The slug is
of course connected physically to this router, and it is this first link
from the slug to the router, that doesn't show up (using the router's web
interface). Even though the indicator lights suggest that there is a
connection, the slug just doesn't appear in the IP table list for connected
devices.

I haven't tried the direct-to-Win-PC suggestion yet, but I still don't have
a connection to the router. Despite much fiddling, and even resetting the
router to factory defaults..
