A couple of things spring to mind, after experiences with mine.

I'd connect the slug direct to your PC rather than through the router,
and as Rob said, make sure any firewalls are off on the PC.

Then use wireshark to listen for the slug broadcasting, that'll give
you it's IP address and you'll be away.

I never did use mine with the stock software, I flashed it with debian
and never looked back.
