I think this is a case that everybody does it, and everybody knows that
everybody does it. Morally, there's nothing wrong with it, and I'd be
very surprised if anyone were sued simply for doing this. If you were
also downloading lots of music you didn't have the rights to, then it
may be tacked on as an extra charge against you.

So far, as far as I'm aware, nobody has ever been sued just for ripping
their own CDs to a different format for their own use.
