I can sympathise with your lack of sympathy. It's a while back now, but I had 5
years of being promised cable broadband 'within 6 months' before it finally
arrived. The first promise was back in 1996 from Nynex who ran the cable
network at the time, they were bought by Cable and Wireless who were then taken
over by NTL who finally admitted they had no plans. Thankfully ADSL became
availble and I got onto the early wires only trial so that I didn't have to get
the original 'frog' working with Linux and could go straigh for a proper
router. Ironically I got a call a week or so after it was installed from NTL
telling me cable broadband was now available (after having been told there were
no plans).

If it makes you feel any better my FTTC connection is currently running at just
over 6mbps where on ADSL it was running at just over 4Mbps. I'm a long way from
the cabinet so the best I ever get is 19Mbps, which is clearly much better than
ADSL but nothing compared to what should be possible. My phone has burst into
life, although I have a replacement part on the way now. No idea what has
changed - a dogy connection in the filter or has BT done something?! I guess I
need to start looking at connection speed now, although I should probably wait
until I've got my new filter.

Before anyone suggests switching to cable, I'd love to for the speed, but they
can't provide an equivelent to my 8 IPv4 addresses and don't seem to have a
clue when I talk about IPv6; it is a single dynamic IPv4 address and I don't
want the hassle of sorting out an IPv6 tunnel and struggling along with a
dynamic DNS service to emulate my current setup.
