8 years ago "HD Ready" LCD TV's were a gimmick for the living room.
8 years ago 1600x1200, 1920x1080, 1920x1200 etc were resolutions
reserved for expensive kit. A good 1080p monitor is still closer to
£250. There are even fewer 1080p laptops for less than £800!*

The majority of TV's and desktops are probably now 1366x768 or
1280x1024 respectively.
It has taken *years* for manufacturers to permeate all ends of the
markets, and get everyone to switch tubes and CRTs to LCD.
LCD as a technology is pretty cheap, but very wasteful. If everyone
has a cheap option tomorrow to at least double their products
resolution, we have just negated a products lifecycle way too early
and created even more waste.
