RE. DSLR

The Nikon D3100 is a very solid and functional camera that out performs later models in image quality, functionality and reliability.
Both my 17yo daughter and wife have one and they take great stills and video.
The "guided" mode is also very useful for newcomers to photography.
Battery life isn't always great so buy a spare and buy a decent SSD.
This is still one of the best entry level cameras you can get - look at the reviews.
There are also a few books written specifically for this camera.
