Hi Sean.
I record stuff at church using a Shure SM58

through i little mixing box, kinda like a mini front of house desk you
see at concerts. the line out from the mixer goes to the audio input on
the mac which can be configured to accept mic input in the sound
settings. Garage band then takes that and will give you a stereo/mono
track (stereo if you se two mics). The SM58 isn't the only mic out there
but its the defacto vocal mic in the business.
