I wasn't sure if the first was necessary either.
I *have* used pvresize, and quite recently -- I was shifting data
off a filesystem on LVM on RAID5 into the space vacated by the RAID5
as I took individual volumes out of it. However, I didn't encounter
this particular issue on the way.
