I made sure that /dev/hda1 was indeed / , then ran fsck on /dev/hda1. It
found errors and offered to fix them. I said yes to every question, crossed
my fingers and rebooted into resident OS. All seems well. <crosses fingers
of right hand>
So this seems to have been at least partly PEBKAC. :-(
Now to check up on hdb1 (/home). After all, it could still be very near
death's door.
