Okay, excuse me for thinking aloud here, but it looks like a muting
issue (or more precisely a volume slider on zero issue), since when I
bring up the Preferences > Sound configuration dialogue and display the
Applications tab, hovering over a sound file pops up 'Audio Preview' on
that tab with what looks like the Totem icon and a volume slider all the
way back over to the left (i.e. 0).

Playing the same file with Totem reveals that the volume is at 75% full
and everything is fine, and I can't find anything specific with regard
to the volume or previews in the preferences of Totem, so it looks like
a bug has been introduced somewhere along the line.
