I don't know if this is relevant to your particular situation, but I
found the whizzy "new" URL bar really irritating when Firefox
introduced it - sufficiently so that I found an "add-on" called oldBar
that reverts the URL entry area's helpful behaviour to its previous
FF2 style. I think the extension came from the main firefox site's
addons/extensions pages. Maybe that would help. I know, it's not as
satisfying as properly diagnosing and fixing what's happening, but it
might give some further indicators.
