Had the same problem some years ago, when I went 64bit/4GB; it was a
BIOS issue. Can't remember exactly what (and would have been BIOS
specific), may have been something to do with a memory hole or
remapping PCI address space or something equally bizarre.

Anyway, fiddling in the BIOS fixed it.
