My very old acer did the same thing.

I powered down - the machine went down cleanly and having tried various things
the following worked.

Keyboard shortcut used to switch to external display.
Plugged in external monitor - worked.

Used this screen to drop the res of the main laptop screen
when this was used, the screen came back to life.

I did try restoring the display res but being a coward went back to the
lower res. A year on it is still owrking.

p.s. It may be worth cleaning out the heatsinks properly - one of our machines
here has muck in the base of the CPU heatsink and it dies after a while.
I *really& need to replace the heatsink when I have the time.
