Umm... what "odd things", exactly?

hrm@selene:~ $ cp -r /home/./hrm/Mail/hlug/ /tmp
hrm@selene:~ $

Works for me. The . is simply a reference to the directory that
contains it, so it effectively means "here", and when used in a path as
above is a no-op.

Even if it did have some other semantics with respect to path
names, it wouldn't cause an I/O error, which usually indicates some
deeper issue like an unrecoverable read error on the disk.
