Ha! Interestingly, and potentially embarrassingly, I found myself typing
"folder" when I wrote the original email. Upon analysis, it seems that I
think of a directory when working at the command line (which is most of
the time) and a folder when working graphically. Maybe that isn't so odd,
but it surprised me.

Thanks for the Truecrypt suggestion: I'll investigate that soon.
