Simplicity was not really what I was after. Stability was and also
something that my D400 could reasonably manage with its 512MB RAM and
it's 1.4GHz Pentium M processor.

For now it seems KDE4 lacks the stability and may need a little more
CPU power or RAM or, probably, even both. Not sure if this is
something to do with the way the Kubuntu guys configured it or if I
needed to spend more time setting it up.

Good news is that GNOME on Ubuntu 8.10 seems to be rock solid and fast
on this machine, even with Compiz enabled -- something I never had
working on older KDE3 versions of Kubuntu.

For photos I have played with F-Spot and Picasa and for now I think
Picasa (3 beta) is winning, but I have not really used it in anger
yet.

Not done anything with Audio files yet but at least the default player
is able to play all my mp3's without any problems. The test will come
later when I try to rip some more of my CD's for transfer to my iPod.

VLC, which I have used for some time on KDE3 is working very well
under Gnome too, arguably even better.

The thing that initially put me off Gnome was the toolbars but,
despite comments I have heard about Gnome not being very configurable,
I have been able to reconfigure just how I wanted it.

So, all in all, I am happy with the switch even though I am going to
have to learn a load of new shortcut keys.
