if it is in a Debian (official or unofficial) repository then it is
installable with apt, aptitude, synaptic or another of the front-ends
to dpkg (which is all apt and co are). So things like joomla probably
aren't installable with aptitude.

So with those apps it is necessary to do as you say, unzip
the tarball and take it from there.

Speaking personally I don't install anything that isn't in a .deb
package but that is just me being cautious. I like things to be
installed according to Debian guidelines and not ending up in
'non-standard' locations.

Generally speaking debianised applications have any dependencies
sorted out by the package maintainer so you shouldn't have to go
looking for them yourself.
