I don't think you understood. Modem, goes into your server and
connects to a phone socket in or near your rack. You dial into
modem from home. Modems can accept calls as well as originate them
you know.

People still use this a lot as a terminal server because, well, how
do you plan to connect to your terminal server if the datacentre's
network is completely screwed? Many appliance-like terminal servers
come with an additional serial port to plug a modem into, for this
purpose. Or they have a modem built in already.

But apologies if my "wonderful piece of advice" is not suitable.

Also as I said, another PC that you can get to, that then connects
to your Sun via serial. That is all a terminal server is.

That is all that a cisco terminal server is.

You can build one for less than a gazillion pounds, because low
power PCs with a serial port and an ethernet port cost less than a
gazillion pounds. e.g. a mini-itx, wrap pc or Soekris. I like
Soekris but they are relatively expensive. You can buy a USB card
with loads of ports on and use USB-to-serial adaptors.

So they'd be PCs, with a built in power strip.

You are thinking about this way too much.

If you want to buy an appliance as opposed to build you own then the
name for them is "terminal server", as I said. But they're still
just PCs with ethernet and a bunch of serials.

Hope I haven't wasted yours and my time further with my "wonderful advice".
