Thanks for that one, the name rings a bell, but I'd clearly missed it
this time round the investigation loop!

I've come across this one, but it wouldn't help in this situation. My
reference to not being able to copy from a DVD is referring to having
created the DVD on my PC and then not being able to transfer it from the
DVD to my DVD recorder. This is the step I need to handle, and although
the recorder can read SD cards, it won't recognise anything other than
static pictures on them as I've already tried to copy an mpeg across and
not been able to see the file. I could copy the files from the recorder
onto the PC and then create the DVD from there, but that won't match the
rest and subsequent disks - although it may be a fall back option.
Originally I was going to head down this route, but having found it very
easy to burn and finalise a disk with a (somewhat boring) menu straight
from the recorder I've taken the lazy route - if for no other reason than
speed, otherwise the HD on my recorder will stay jam packed with
recordings that I'd like to archive!!

That looks interesting and worth investigating. What I really need to
ensure though is that I don't get bogged down / have too much fun
investigating and experimenting and never get the actual work done! My
first project is to create a DVD of a video of my sons drama club play,
then no doubt I'll start tracking back through my older DV tapes and
even older Hi8 tapes to ensure the recordings don't get lost in the mist
of time and lack of access to suitable hardware to play the tapes on!
