I've contacted PlusNet today and have been told that my line actually
been enabled for "up to 8Mbps". Nice of them to tell me when they did
it! (Especially as their FAQ says you will get a period of instability
and advise reconnecting the router regularly during the first 10 days of
the connection to ensure you get an appropriate speed! Of course, I
didn't know so couldn't do that.) Apparently BT have rated my line as
stable at 1Mbps. I'm about 2.2 miles from the exchange via road. I don't
know whether there's anything one can do to get BT to look at replacing
old cabling? Or re-kick off the line/speed testing process?

The question now is, if I only get 1Mbps out of 8Mbps, would I get a
higher speed with ADSL2? Or would I just be getting 1Mbps out of 24Mbps?

I was looking at the Pro package which includes 1 static IP, which is
probably all I'd need at first. They do offer up to 16 though, which is
as many as I have at work!

My ADSL router is too old to talk ADSL2, so I'd either have to use their
hardware or buy my own. I'd read about the security problems and would
check what was open to where.

Thanks,
