In 1990 I sat in a hall and listened to Ken Thompson talking about the
new ANSI C compiler design for Plan 9. It was 99% ANSI C conformant
but threw out a couple or archaic features, the most important of
which was K&R backwards compatability.
They'd been advised to drop this feature by a Mr Brian W. Kernighan
who may have known something about it.
I've used ANSI style types wherever possible ever since.
