No, but the nvidia drivers from nvidia do build the kernel module and
will fall over if that does not complete and load successfully. I
considered using Envy to install the nvidia-nvidia drivers (as opposed
to the Ubuntu packaged ones), but there seems to be a lot of advice
against that, and I must confess I would prefer to update via the update
manager rather than manually.

I haven't, but these have been working perfectly fine for years with the
previous ATI card and I can't help but think there would something in
the Xorg error log if that were the issue.

No, all suggestions and thoughts were invited, and I am grateful for the
response.

One crazy notion that occurred to e in the state before being fully
awake this morning is that of the PSU. I have a 430W Antec PSU that, on
paper, is seriously under-powered for the job (500-600W is recommended
for these vards). As any Shuttle owner will tell you, it's not about the
numbers but about the quality, and Antec have a reputation for good
quality. Of course, the fact that I can fire up FEAR or Quake 4 with all
bells and whistles under XP would appear to banish that theory to the
land of dreams from whence it came, but I am still suspicious due to the
lack of any concrete errors or clues.

Does anyone knoww if it is possible to load the drivers sans-GLX. I
tried it and failed, but that may have been in the period plagued by
buggy driver packages from Ubuntu.
