Just to follow this up, I posted a similar question on my blog[1] and
received a couple of helpful comments. One commenter pointed me in the
direction of:

1) London Ruby User Group (LRUG): http://lrug.org/
2) Rails West Midlands (RailsWM): http://railswm.org/
3) Bournemouth Ruby Group: http://rubyholic.com/groups/show/401

There also seem to be:
1) Brighton Ruby Group: http://brighton-ruby.org/
2) North West Ruby Users Group: http://nwrug.org/
3) Leeds Ruby Group

The first of these two do seem active. Might it be worth picking one of
the more local groups and joining in with their fun?

Tony
