The page clearly states that's for Debian 2.1 which was released 9 years
ago. It's not surprising that there's library problems. It's always a
problem using proprietary software packages supplied by a third party.

To be honest, you really would be better off looking at GAIM which
supports AIM and is a) packaged in your distro and b) released more
recently.
