It is an Nvidia Gforce4 420 Go
lspci reports it as such, as does the Xorg logs when it loads the
Nvidia drivers.

I have been playing with my desktop system today, and have managed to
get compiz working on that. Very cool, but ultimately not very
useful.

I like being able to turn compiz on and off easily, as some things
(xine full screen) don't seem to like it.

I will have another bash at getting the laptop to work tomorrow. I
very nearly lost my temper with it yesterday, which is not good as
this is supposed to be fun.

Back to my problem. I am guessing that the Nvidia driver is trying
to be nice to the hardware and falling back to a safe setting. What
I need to do is tell it who is boss, and get it to run at the
resolution that I want (1024x768).
