Are you talking about a "Toner & Probe" [1] or if I had the money I'd
buy the Fluke [2].

They don't work quite how you describe, you need to plug the toner into
the remote socket before scanning the panel with the probe. I don't
know of a probe that will work passivly with any old kit plugged in
at the remote end.
