DVD Rewriters start from about £14. This might still be your best option...

All the ones I've ever tried have been absolutely fine, if a little slow.

There are bidirectional interfaces available. I've never had any trouble
with them, but I have limited experience - it's usually easier to get the
right device in the first place.

You might find a header on the motherboard, but that'll still leave you
with lash-up patch cables in the box. It's less than ideal...

I sympathise, but your best solution would probably be to mark that drive
up as know-good, put it on the shelf, and buy a new SATA drive.
