Hello folks
One of my website clients has just received the email which is pasted
below. I'm pretty sure that it's a scam -- they're just trying to scare
people into using their 'intercrm' product.
On the other hand, the Equality Act 2010 does apparently include rules
about websites (see e.g.
http://www.computerweekly.com/opinion/What-you-need-to-know-about-the-Equality-Act-2010
)
Does anyone know of a compliance-checker for websites? Or just a simple
list of rules? (The websightassist.org site mentioned in the email
below advertises a checker, but given their aggressive marketing, I'm
reluctant to try it in case they then start targeting me with similar
emails.)
cheers
Chris

IMPORTANT NOTICE
THERE MAY BE ACCESS PROBLEMS WITH YOUR WEBSITE!
You may not be aware but it is now a legal requirement for a website to
comply with the Equality Act 2010 (EA’10). Failure to act after being
informed of a compliance issue may result in an offending website being
suspended and its operator or hosting company being taken to court and
sued for unlimited damages.
The Act says that… as service providers, website operators are legally
responsible and have a mandatory duty to make reasonable adjustments to
ensure that their websites are accessible to all, which includes making
it accessible to the visually impaired
We are therefore contacting you, the websites operators to make you
aware that in its current state your website may present accessibility
problems for disabled people, who’s conditions cause a visual
impairment, e.g. partially sighted, blindness, and dyslexia.
Due to the way that the majority of websites have been built, it is
highly likely that your website will need to be made properly accessible
to the visually impaired. As such, and to avoid EA’10 legislation being
used against its operator, who, until it is made accessible, remains
liable to be sued at any time, we would encourage you to test your
website using the test facility available at the website link below.
Why are we telling you this?
BECAUSE WE ARE AWARE OF INDIVIDUALS WHO TAKE ACTION
AGAINST WEBSITE’S OPERATORS AND BECAUSE WE CAN HELP.
THE WEBSITE’S OPERATOR SHOULD AS A MATTER OF URGENCY LOG
ON TO THE FOLLOWING WEBSITE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.....
