That's when you go to the source package from your distro, and drop the
tarball from upstream into it.
You end up with something built in the same way as the distro-maintained
version, but using bleeding-edge code. That saves *so* much heartache
later on.
It's really not that much work unless the up-to-date code is in some way
incompatible with your OS - but that's not something that can be cured
with a binary installation...
