I ouldn't drill holes at all.  I've had a good result with Devolo powerline ethernet-over-power adaptors.  I have one adaptor and a small 4 or 8 port switch per target room.
No drilling, no holes, they DEWISOTT.  Plus when I move I can just unplug the kit and take it with me.
