Subject: [Hampshire] New Monitor: X.org issue: "not enough memory bandwidth"
Hi,

just fitted a new 21.5" monitor (AOC2236SWA) to an Ubuntu 10.04LTS
system, 1GB memory.
I didn't do anything with X, just rebooted.
The monitor is capable of 1920x1080 resolution.

The screen display is not very pretty. It's displaying at 1280x720,
and the vertical lines look a bit iffy (technical term).
victor@qg-backup:~$ xdpyinfo | grep dimensions
  dimensions: 1280x720 pixels (329x185 millimeters)
(the actual size is rather bigger of course - I think it's just
dividing the pixel dimensions by 96 to convert dpi to a physical
size).

This showed in the Xorg.0.log file:

(II) RADEON(0): h_active: 1920 h_sync: 2008 h_sync_end 2052
h_blank_end 2200 h_border: 0
(II) RADEON(0): Not using mode "1920x1080" (mode requires too much
memory bandwidth)

I ran through the 'System Test' program and put the results at
http://victor.shacknet.nu/html/submission.xml.html (635 KB)
and the X server log at
http://victor.shacknet.nu/html/Xorg.0.log (150 KB)

The system test told me:
Gathering information about your system...
Distribution: Ubuntu 10.04
Desktop environment: GNOME
Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc ES1000 (rev 02)
Driver in use: radeon
Rendering method: AIGLX

There's not a lot about this on Google, and what there is seems rather
old. Does anyone have any suggestions before I resort to tinkering
with an xorg.conf file ( which of course I don't have at the moment)?
I will feel a lemon if I have bought something I can't make use of.

thanks

victor
