Assuming you can do the necessary sudo magic ... here jrh updates dmh's
gconf settings (not that I'd _ever_ do that, dearest) ....

jrh $ xhost +SI:localuser:dmh
localuser:dmh being added to access control list
jrh $ sudo -u dmh -i
[sudo] password for jrh:
dmh $ DISPLAY=:0 gconf-editor
dmh $ logout
jrh $ xhost -SI:localuser:dmh
localuser:dmh being removed from access control list
