Subject: [Hampshire] Testing Western Digital drives now needs Windows
A possibly cautionary tale. We recently purchased 2 x 2Tb Western Digital
disks. Suspecting a problem, we download the latest standalone .iso
diagnostics from the WD support site. The diagnostic disk boots,
recognises the disks, but states that they are not supported by that
version of the diagnostics. We contacted WD support to find out which
version did support those disks, and where we could download it from, and
we were told:

"the drive is question can be tested on windows only"

(I'll happily post the full reply from WD if anyone wants to see it).

So, to test a drive, we would need to purchase a copy of Windows. In
future, we'll be buying other manufacturers' disks.

Most readers here probably do have access to a Windows system, so maybe
not a problem.
