I used to dial into work over a modem to a bank of modems in the server room,
mainly to use Office Vision from memory, but you could also get internet access
- not a lot of use, except if you were allowed to use the dial back feature :)

The strangest bit of 'modem' work I did was using an ISDN modem to dial out (I
think it was through the internal telephone system onto an ISDN line, but I
can't remember for sure). This then made an international call to a Windows 98
PC in Holland that was running the company email system (some software called
MDaemon). It was a completely mad way of working, and a big change from
administering an RS6000 runing AIX and the Netscape Messaging Suite that I was
used to before the part of Xyratex I was working for got sold off to Teleplan.
Believe it or not this was as recent as 2000!!
