Late in on this discussion; I have the same symptoms having given my
3-yr old Acer Aspire T180 desktop a 4GB memory upgrade for Xmas ;-)

I too see a BIOS upgrade for this model on the Acer web site but have
always felt a bit cautious about doing those, especially on my main
box... Suppose I could try googling to see what is in the upgrade. I
certainly did not see any 3GB memory hole options when I looked after
installing the memory.
